USDA starts SNAP work conversation

The USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service says the agency has opened up a comment period on potential work requirements for certain recipients of SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, the largest part of the Farm Bill. Food and Nutrition Services administrator Brandon Lipps told reporters they are seeking input about Able-Bodied Adults with no dependents, who make up 9% of total SNAP recipients, “Most of you know that there’s been a lot of conversation for a number of years on how best to serve this population. USDA wants to move SNAP recipients out of poverty and into work with the ultimate goal of self-sufficiency. You’ve heard the administration talk about that a number of times.”

Lips says this 45-day comment period does NOT signal the start of a rule making process and he could not comment on what a rule might end up looking like. He says they are hoping to hear from all stakeholders, including states since most of them have partial waivers for SNAP work requirements for that population.
