Record pork, red meat production in January 2018

 

Domestic pork and total red meat production during January were new all-time monthly highs.

The USDA says pork production jumped 6% to 2.290 billion pounds, with a 6% higher slaughter rate to 10.714 million head and a 2 pound heavier average live weight at 286 pounds, and beef production was 8% higher at 2.278 billion pounds, also with an increased kill pace, up 7% at 2.756 million head, and bigger average live weight, up 6 pounds at 1,376 per head. The USDA says the January dairy cow slaughter was 289,800 head, up on both the month and the year, representing 20.1% of the total monthly kill.

Total monthly red meat production was up 7% on the year at 4.587 billion pounds.

The USDA’s official 2017 red meat production totals are out in April.
