Baseball Hall of Famer, Giants legend Orlando Cepeda in critical condition

USA TODAY Sports
Known as the Baby Bull, Orlando Cepeda spent the majority of his career with the Giants from 1958-1966.

Baseball Hall of Famer and San Francisco Giants legend Orlando Cepeda is in critical condition in a Bay Area hospital, the club said in a statement on Wednesday.

He was hospitalized late Monday due to what the club described as a "cardiac incident.''

Cepeda's last public appearance was in January when he toasted fellow Hall of Famer Willie McCovey at McCovey’s 80th birthday party at AT&T Park.

Known as the Baby Bull, Cepeda, 80, spent the first eight-plus seasons of his 17-year career with the Giants from 1958-1966. He won the National League rookie of the year award in 1958.

In 1966, Cepeda was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals, where he won a World Series title and the NL MVP award in 1967.

The 11-time All-Star also played for the Atlanta Braves (1969-1972) and closed his career with the Oakland A’s, Boston Red Sox and Kansas City Royals.

His No. 30 jersey was retired by the Giants in 1999, and he also has been honored with a statue outside the ballpark.

Cepeda was the second Puerto Rican player to make the Hall, joining Roberto Clemente.
