Settlement reached in ADM suit against Syngenta

Syngenta has settled the lawsuit filed against it by the grain company Archer Daniels Midland over Syngenta’s Agrisure Viptera biotech corn.  ADM spokeswoman Jackie Anderson and Syngenta spokesman Paul Minehart each confirmed for Brownfield that the suit was settled, but also say terms are confidential.

The settlement is another step by Syngenta to resolve its legal issues over the MIR-162 corn trait that resulted in China rejecting shiploads of corn before they’d approved the trait for import.  MIR-162 was approved in the U.S. and for export to many other countries, but the suit focused on Syngenta marketing the trait before all approvals had been granted.

Minehart tells Brownfield a settlement draft is still in the works in the lawsuit against Syngenta brought by farmers claiming the rejected shipments caused a drop in the corn market.  An agreement was reached last fall to stop litigation in that suit.
