PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Anika Washburn, Brookfield Academy: The 5-foot-3 senior guard accomplished a unique double feat with her 15-point performance in an 54-28 victory over University School on Thursday: 1,000 points in basketball and 100 goals in soccer.  Washburn, who averages 17 points per game, raised her career total to 1,007 points. On the pitch, she has been one of the state’s top scorers the past three seasons. She had 55 goals as a junior and owns 143 for her career.

Honorable mention

Hannah Belanger, Grafton: The junior guard scored 24 points in the Black Hawks' 56-55 victory over North Shore champion Slinger on Friday. Belanger is averaging 20.4 points per game during Grafton’s five-game winning streak.

Brooklyn Bull, Union Grove: The senior guard became the school’s all-time leading scorer during a 17-point effort in a 63-40 win over Elkhorn on Feb. 12. Bull, who is averaging 18.7 points per game for the Broncos, enters the postseason with 1,176 points in three seasons. The former record of 1,133 belong to 2007 graduate Kaleigh Veltus.

Kiara Redman Trotter, St. Francis: The junior broke two single-season school records Saturday in a 50-45 loss to Kenosha Christian Life. With 32 points, she raised her season point total to 476, 21 more than the previous record set by Sharon Romel in 1980-'81. Redman Trotter also had three steals to raise her total of 100, one more than Romel’s total in 1980-'81.

Sydnee Roby, Milwaukee King: With her team needing a victory Thursday over Milwaukee Vincent to grab a share of the City lead, the 6-4 center delivered 22 points on 7-for-9 shooting, 14 rebounds (10 offensive) and three steals.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

Oak Creek: The Knights extended the area’s longest streak of conference titles to six with victories over Racine Park on Thursday and Kenosha Tremper on Saturday. Senior Kassandra Bartek (13 ppg) and junior Maddie Gard (11.5) are the leading scorers for a team that has six players averaging between 13 and five points per game. Senior guard Haley Zylka averages 6.3 assists per game for the Knights, who enter the postseason as the No. 1 seed in the Division 1 West Allis Central Sectional 

Mukwonago: The Indians went 3-0 last week to wrap up their second Classic 8 title in three years. The big victory was a 59-49 victory over Arrowhead, which prevented the Warhawks from clinching the title and created a tie for first place. Dru Henning finished with 16 points and junior guard Grace Beyer added 12 points to surpass 1,000 for her career. Mukwonago followed that with a 61-38 victory over Oconomowoc on Thursday in which Beyer had 13 points and a 75-44 win over Kettle Moraine on Friday in which sophomore Angie Cera (22 points) and junior Natalie Andersen (21).

COMING UP

The WIAA tournament begins Tuesday with regional finals slated for Saturday. Assuming the top seeds win, these will be some of the more intriguing regional final matchups.

DIVISION 1

Brookfield Central at West Allis Hale: Hale won a share of the Greater Metro title, but Central put up a good fight in both meetings this season.

DIVISION 2

Slinger at Milwaukee Vincent: City Conference co-champion Vincent, which spent a good portion of the season ranked No. 1 in the area, will have to get by the North Shore champion to reach the sectional and a likely showdown with defending state champion Beaver Dam.

Burlington at Union Grove: Union Grove took first in the Southern Lakes and Burlington finished second. The teams split two games.

New Berlin West at Pewaukee: These Woodland rivals split two games with West winning the last meeting, 52-50, Jan. 19.

DIVISION 3

Dominican at St. Thomas More: These Metro Classic rivals split two games this season with Dominican winning last week to spoil the Cavaliers chance of getting a share of their first league title since 2000.

Brookfield Academy at Kettle Moraine Lutheran: The champions of the Midwest Classic and East Central conferences hit the floor

DIVISION 4

Lake Country Lutheran at Milwaukee Academy of Science: Shemera Williams had 36 points for MAS in the teams’ first meeting, an 81-80 overtime victory for the Novas at home.
