PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Cade Garcia, Whitefish Bay: The senior guard had the hot hand in the Blue Dukes’ 80-68 victory over North Shore champion Cedarburg Frday as he scored a career-high 35 points and hit 6 three-pointers. Bay has won eight straight games and Garcia has averaged 20 points during that stretch, helping the team go from 4-8 to 12-8 with a No. 3 seed in its sectional. He leads the Blue Dukes with 16 points per game for the season.

Honorable mention

Diovonte Caldwell, Destiny: The senior guard came to play in showdowns with Milwaukee Academy of Science and Milwaukee Washington last week and in three contests last week averaged 18 points, six assists and five rebounds.

Trequan Carrington, Martin Luther: The junior guard returned to the floor after a two-month absence due to an ankle injury last week. He scored eight points in a 74-47 victory over Shoreland Lutheran Tuesday and then posted 22 points in an 89-67 win over Kenosha St. Joseph Thursday.

Nate Jenkins, Kettle Moraine: The 6-foot-2 junior guard’s three-pointer at the buzzer lifted the Lasers to a 63-60 victory over Waukesha North Thursday that kept the team in the hunt for the Classic 8 title. He finished with a team-high 27 points and in two games last week averaged 28.5 points per contest.

Ryan Waddell, Homestead: The junior guard’s 22-point effort was his third in the last four games and it helped the Highlanders wrap up second-place in the North Shore Conference. He is averaging a team-best 17.7 points per game.

TEAMS OF THE WEEK

Arrowhead: The Warhawks played themselves into position for their second straight Classic 8 title last week with victories over two of the conference's top teams. Tuesday they defeated league-leader Mukwonago, 68-65, to take over the league lead and then defeated Waukesha North on the road, 59-50, to move one victory away from at least a title share. A late bucket by sophomore forward Carter Gilmore and a block by 6-9 senior  Jonathan Chycinski helped seal the victory. Gilmore finished with 21 points on 8-for-16 shooting and grabbed 12 rebounds. Seniors Chandler Pulvermacher (14 points) and Jared Matheny (12) reached double digits as did Chycinski (10).

Brown Deer: The Falcons extended the area’s longest streak of conference titles to six Friday with an 82-79 victory at Milwaukee Lutheran that gave them a share of the Woodleast East crown with Whitnall. The Gentry brothers, senior Jay and junior Jaylon, finished with 23 points each in the clincher. Junior Brooklyn Jagers (14) and senior Tejhaun Palmer (10) also reached double figures. The victory was the 10th straight for Brown Deer, which beat Wisconsin Lutheran on Monday.

COMING UP

Whitnall at Pewaukee, 7:15 p.m. Wednesday: The champs of the Woodland East and Woodland West meet in the league’s championship game.

Milwaukee Academy of Science at Destiny, 7 p.m. Wednesday: Destiny held off MAS in an intense 11-point victory last week. It should be more of the same this time.

Arrowhead at Muskego, 7 p.m. Thursday: In order to clinch its second straight outright Classic 8 title, Arrowhead must beat a Warriors squad it lost to by 11 on Jan. 12.

Milwaukee Riverside at Milwaukee Washington, 7 p.m. Thursday: The Purgolders will be trying to complete an undefeated season in the City Conference with a victory over the second-place Tigers.

Prairie School at Racine St. Catherine’s, 7 p.m. Thursday: A victory over the third-place Angels will assure Prairie School its second straight Metro Classic title.

Dominican at Martin Luther, 7 p.m. Thursday: Martin Luther has a shot of getting a share of its second straight Metro Classic title, but it must take care of business against the fourth-place Knights.

Mukwonago at Kettle Moraine, 7 p.m. Saturday: Mukwonago will clinch a share of its first Classic 8 title since 2013 if it survives a tough week that features fourth-place Waukesha West and third-place Kettle Moraine.
