’18 Farm Bill an evolution of revolutionary 2014 legislation

A Farm Bureau policy specialist who calls the 2014 Farm Bill revolutionary views the next Farm Bill as evolutionary.

Amber Hanson-Glaeser with Minnesota Farm Bureau tells Brownfield the current legislation received a major overhaul.

“With the ARC and PLC (programs), the Margin Protection Program, and so many big changes to what we were used to.  And as we move into the next Farm Bill, it’s more about tweaking things.”

She says the Title I (one) commodity programs aren’t working quite like intended and need to be fixed.

Hanson-Glaeser points out the bipartisan Budget Act recently signed into law will simplify Farm Bill negotiations.

“We saw changes in the Act to address the dairy issue.  So it’s a lot of changes to make sure the programs work like we need them to, but making sure we’re protecting things as we move ahead too.”

She says there likely won’t be any new dollars in the next Farm Bill.

Brownfield interviewed Hanson-Glaeser at the Rural Legislative Forum in Mankato Thursday evening.
