Athlete of the Week: Bears' Gildyard, Sharks' Joffre win

 

Brooklyn Gildyard, Palmetto Ridge

Palmetto Ridge High School basketball player Brooklyn Gildyard has been voted Naples Daily News Athlete of the Week for Feb. 5-10.

Gildyard scored 15 points in the Class 7A-District 12 championship game last week, leading the Bears to their first district championship and first regional playoff berth in 13 years. She received 1,030 of the 1,417 votes (73 percent) on the Daily News' online poll.

Gulf Coast soccer player Sebastian Joffre was second in the poll with 273 points (19 percent), followed by Barron Collier soccer player Sierra Rincon with 99 votes (7 percent).

Joffre is the Daily News winner, selelcted by the newspaper's staff. The senior led the Sharks to a victory in the Class 4A regional semifinals last week by scoring two goals.

A new Athlete of the Week poll opens at noon every Monday and closes at noon the following Thursday.

Boys Basketball

D.J. Haynes, Palmetto Ridge – Averaged 16.5 points in two Bears victories last week

Girls Basketball

Brooklyn Gildyard, Palmetto Ridge – Led the Bears to their first district title in 13 years by scoring 15 points in the Class 7A-District 12 final

Boys Soccer

Sebastian Joffre, Gulf Coast – Scored two goals in a 4-1 win over Palmetto in the Class 4A regional semifinals, including the go-ahead goal in the second half

Girls Soccer

Sierra Rincon, Barron Collier – Scored the Cougars’ only goal in a 3-1 loss to North Fort Myers in the Class 3A regional quarterfinals
