COMMUNITY BRIEFS FEB. 14 to FEB. 21:

FEB. 14: “The Basics of Alzheimer’s Disease,” a general introduction for those seeking a basic knowledge of Alzheimer’s disease and an overview of support resources that are available in their area, is set for 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Feb. 14, at the Mescalero Apache Tribal Elerly Program, 456 Lipan Ave., Mescalero; and from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., at the Ruidoso Public Library, 107 Kansas City Rpad, Ruidoso. The programs will provide valuable information on the disease process and different stages of Alzheimer’s. The class also helps caregivers and family members differentiate dementia from normal age-related memory changes by introducing the warning signs and known risk factors. FEB. 14: The Ruidoso Public Library will feature the art work of Barbara Cooper until the end of March. The library is on Kansas City Road next to village hall, off Cree Meadows Drive.

FEB. 15: Faith Community Health Ministry invites the public to learn more about geriatric and general practice in Ruidoso from Dr. Suzelle Moffit from noon to 1 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 15, at Community United Methodist Church, 220 Junction Road, Ruidoso. A light luncheon will be served.

FEB.17: The Idle of Sky Nursery Apple Tree Grafting Workshop is set for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 17, at the nursery, 174 White Oaks Road in White Oaks. A workshop set for Feb. 25 is full. Participants will have “hands on” practice identifying and cutting scion wood, grafting practice and then will graft their own apple tree to take home.  Each participant will receive their own grafting knife. All materials will be provided to practice and graft one tree. Hot coffee and tea will be available throughout the session, but bring a sack lunch.  Class will be held in an unheated greenhouse, so dress warmly and bring your own hand clippers. Additional Scion Wood (many varieties will be available) and Rootstocks may be purchased separately if desired.  Scion Wood is $10 a piece, and Rootstocks are $12 each. Cell phone service in White Oaks is limited. FEB. 17: At 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 17, Ruidoso will be treated to a special concert and creative art show at Sacred Grounds Coffee & Tea House featuring the nationally acclaimed Classical Guitarist, Gabriel Ayala, a member of the Yaqui people of southern Arizona. The art show and dining seating starts at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15. A more recent addition to Gabriel’s creative repertoire are his “Musical Ledger Art” paintings and jewelry. Tickets do not include food or drinks. Tickets can be purchased at Sacred Grounds Coffee House. Reserved seat tickets can be purchased through EVENTBRITE.

FEB. 18: Jamie Estes and the Brunch Bunch perform gospels from noon to 2:30 p..m., Sunday, Feb. 18, at Sacred Grounds Coffee and Tea House.

FEB. 19: The White Mountain Search and Rescue team will conduct its regular monthly meeting Monday evening at 7 p.m., , Feb.19,  (board meeting at 5:45p.m.) upstairs at the First Christian Church, 1211 Hull Road, Ruidoso.  All interested people are welcome to attend. Topic will include determining locations. FEB. 19: Celebrate Recovery  at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays, River Crossing Ministries, Life Recovery Church, Community Methodist Church, 220 Junction Road, Ruidoso. A snack supper and fellowship are at 5:30 p.m., with worship at 6:15 p.m. and a 6:45 p.m. break into recovery specific support groups.

FEB. 22: The TEN Tenors, known as “vocal wonder from down under,” return to Spencer Theater at 7 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 22, with an all new show "Wish You Were Here," an incredible selection of rock anthems, energetic pop hits, and beautiful ballads honoring musical legends of late including Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Prince, David Bowie, John Lennon and Amy Winehouse.

FEB. 23: ENMU-Ruidoso President, Ryan Carstens addresses the Creative Aging's Monthly Meeting at 10 a.m., Feb. 23, at the college, asking questions about our communities and how he can help both the college and our programs. All are welcome. Refreshments will be served

FEB. 27:. Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease will be discussed in an informal, interactive discussion group from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Feb. 27,  at ENMU-Ruidoso. Clara Farah, Ph.D. will act as facilitator. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

March 3: Ruidoso Wine Festival, beginning at noon, March 3, and at 6 p.m., March 4, at the Ruidoso Convention Center, 111 Sierra blanca Drive. Calling all foodies and wine lovers. For savory eats and New Mexico wines, this festival promises eclectic tastings, hands-on cooking demos and wine-related specialty items.Take your time and enjoy wine by the glass while you shop through over 30 of our local vendors who feature handmade goodies such as gourmet chocolate and candies, handmade crafts, and specialty items showcased by each vendor. This will be a great opportunity for some last minute Valentine's Day gifts for your special someone. A sampling from 12-plus New Mexico wineries is on the menu. Wine sales will be by the bottle or case. Advanced tickets are on sale online through Eventbrite.com. Tickets are $20.00 per day in advance and $25.00 at the door. Weekend passes will be $30.00 in advance or $35.00 at the door.
