Oxnard police investigating shooting death in Community Center Park

A 26-year-old Oxnard man was shot to death Saturday night in Community Center Park West, the Oxnard Police Department reported, marking the city's first homicide of 2018.

An Oxnard man was found shot to death overnight at a city park at 801 Hobson Way, the Oxnard Police Department reported Sunday. It was the city's first homicide in 2018.

Around midnight, officers responded to reports of shots heard at the park at 801 Hobson Way, authorities said Sunday. They found a man lying on the sidewalk near the northern end of the parking lot, toward Seventh Street, and summoned an ambulance. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The department's major crimes unit is investigating. As of Sunday afternoon, detectives did not have a motive for the murder and they had not 

The park, which features softball diamonds and tennis courts, is situated across Hobson Way from the city's Performing Arts Center. On Sunday afternoon, family activities continued normally and no sign of the overnight violence was visible.

In 2017, 15 homicides were reported in Oxnard, which is Ventura County's largest city, with a population of more than 207,000. Last year, two slayings had been tallied by the end of the first week of 2017.
