United, Marriott extend RewardsPlus partnership

Back in July United Airlines and Marriott introduced their RewardsPlus partnership, linking their loyalty programs with benefits like elite status reciprocity and better points transfers. At that time there was some kerfuffle about the timing of the benefits, mostly because the status as granted was set to expire in early 2014. Turns out (not surprisingly) that the angst was for naught.  The two have agreed to continue the partnership through 2014.

Per an announcement from United on Milepoint today:

United MileagePlus and Marriott Rewards are pleased to share that we will be extending the RewardsPlus program into 2014.

For those of you already registered in the program, if you’ve qualified for 2014 MileagePlus Premier Gold status or higher, no action is needed on your part as we will automatically renew your registration for 2014 benefits. If you’ve qualified for 2014 MileagePlus Premier Gold status or higher and haven’t registered for RewardsPlus, you can register at united.com/rewardsplus to enjoy complimentary Marriott Rewards Gold Elite status. Please note that while we are in the process of renewing registrations for 2014, the registration website will be down for a period of time starting December 28th. We will provide an update when the site is live again in 2014 and ready to accept registrations.

RewardsPlus offers complimentary Marriott Rewards Gold Elite status for MileagePlus members who qualify for United Global Services, Premier 1K®, Premier Platinum or Premier Gold while Marriott Rewards Platinum Elite members can register for complimentary MileagePlus Premier Silver status. In addition, all MileagePlus or Marriott Rewards members can receive a 20% discount on points-to-miles conversions and 10% more miles for Marriott Rewards Travel Packages.

Or, if you don’t want to bother with reading that, you get to keep your reciprocal status for another year. If you have not yet registered for such you should do so before 28 December 2013.

Not really worth a ton to me as a benefit, but so long as it is free I’ll take it. I did actually get to use my status once this year on a last-minute, distressed passenger booking in Philadelphia so that was nice.

The comparable program offered by Delta and Starwood Preferred Guest will also extend into 2014.

    1. UA said they’re going to take the site offline ” for a period of time starting December 28th” so if you don’t register before that it is not clear when in 2014 you will again be eligible to register. You will be able to eventually, of course, but if you have any stays booked for early in the year and want the benefits you’ll need to do this earlier than that.
