Prep roundup: Naples girls basketball defeats Barron Collier

The Naples High School girls basketball team beat Barron Collier 50-43 at home  on Tuesday night.

Makayla Gardner led the Golden Eagles with 11 points. Sydney Zerbe added nine.

“Good district win for us,” Naples coach Daniella Rosset said. “Proud of the defensive effort and how unselfish we were on the offensive end. Darby Horne and Keira Wood brought energy and played well, and Grace Sullivan, Aliyah Garnett, and Nicole O’Donnell did a great job applying defensive pressure.”

GOLDEN GATE 40, PALMETTO RIDGE 38: Lily Sanchez led the Titans with 14 points. Mia Francois added 13. Zarkyah Cunningham finished with nine points, including a 3-pointer with nine seconds left to seal the game.

“This game was a hard-fought battle on both sides and every quarter was tight,” Golden Gate coach Keri Looker said. “Our defense led the way in the fourth and the girls really kept their composure and executed well down the stretch when we needed it most. I am really proud of the overall effort and energy that the girls brought tonight, it was key to getting us a come from behind win like this.”

FIRST BAPTIST 53, CANTERBURY 50: Nicole Smith led the Lions with 19 points.

"We were fortunate to win against a very good Canterbury team,” First Baptist coach Jen Lines said. “They outplayed us for three quarters. I am really proud of our girls for finishing strong in the fourth quarter. We stepped up our defensive intensity and Nicole Smith carried us on offense."

FBA is at Naples on Thursday at 7 p.m.

LABELLE 55, SEACREST 53: Logan Nikolich finished with a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Stingrays. Olyvia Salain added 12.

“Down by 15 going into the fourth quarter our girls fought back and we had two shots to win the game,” Seacrest coach John Wholihan said. “Proud of how we persevered. We hit 13 for 16 from free-throw line in fourth quarter.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

PALMETTO RIDGE 83, GOLDEN GATE 60: Derek Rascher led the Bears with 17 points. D.J. Haynes added 15. Ricky Jean-Baptiste and Jacquez Carter each had 11, while Adrian Gomez finished with 10 points.

“Outstanding effort and intensity tonight,” Palmetto Ridge coach Steve Crowder said. ‘Everyone contributed to this team district win.”

Nico Shuler had 14 points and Cesar Marsielle had 12 for the Titans.

"All credit to Palmetto for a strong defensive effort, and balanced offensive attack," Golden Gate coach Brian Kelly said.

Palmetto Ridge (15-5) hosts Barron Collier on Friday at 7 p.m.

LELY 65, CYPRESS LAKE 47: Whitley Theork led the Trojans with 19 points. McCline St. Tulus added 18.

“The Lely fans brought amazing energy tonight in the Lely gym,” Lely coach Fritz Jacques said. “They made it a lot of fun for the kids and I tonight.”

MARINER 66, IMMOKALEE 38: Hasahnn Reynolds finished with 11 points for the Indians.

“In order to compete for a district championship we have to play with more passion,” Immokalee coach Garrett Hull said.

Immokalee hosts Gulf Coast on Thursday at 7 p.m.

BOYS SOCCER

NAPLES 3, COMMUNITY SCHOOL 2: Luis Baldivieso led the Golden Eagles, scoring a pair of goals. Emanuel Garcia also found the net.

SOUTH FORT MYERS 3, CYPRESS LAKE 1:  Kai Cormier led the Wolfpack scoring a pair of goals. Ozzy Diaz also found the net. Wolfpack goalkeeper Juan Ramirez finished with five saves. 

BARRON COLLIER 1, ESTERO 1: Andre Aguilera scored the Cougars’ goal, with an assist from Patrik Hamann.
