MILLBROOK — A Millbrook man has been charged with the rape of a 15-year-old.

The victim’s mother told police that she had spent the night with a friend over the weekend and a man forced her to have sex, said Police Chief P.K. Johnson. Jaquez Naqwan Harris, 18, is charged with rape, he said. Harris was arrested Tuesday.

Harris was in the Elmore County Jail on Tuesday night under a bond of $60,000, jail records show. He could not be reached for comment. Courthouse records show he doesn’t have an attorney.

The alleged offense happened on Friday, but was not reported until Sunday, the chief said.

“The victim’s mother didn’t learn about the incident until Sunday, at which time she reported it to the police department,” Johnson said.

“Unfortunately, it’s common for victims of sexual assault to delay reporting the crime and many don’t report them at all. That is a shame, not only because it hampers law enforcement’s ability to collect valuable physical evidence that could help tremendously in building a case against the offender, the victim really needs treatment and counseling.

“It’s important for young people to understand that it’s not their fault when something like this occurs and it’s important that things like this be reported. So that they can get the help they need and law enforcement can take the necessary steps to try and prevent an offender from harming someone else.”
