NAFTA’s sixth round opens Tuesday

The sixth round of North American Free Trade Agreement re-negotiations begins Tuesday in Montreal.  Mexico’s U.S. ambassador Geronimo Gutierrez tells Bloomberg TV the U.S., Canada and Mexico generally agree on about 40% of the topics being negotiated.

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue says he has faith in President Trump’s ability to bring the talks to a successful conclusion.

“[President Trump is] a tough negotiator, and I think he wants a good for America, as I do,” said Perdue, in comments provided by the USDA.  “He’s got a big, wide economy to look after, but we’re whispering in his ear every week about how important NAFTA is to American agriculture.”

One of the most contentious agriculture issues in the NAFTA talks is supply management, the system regulating quantities and prices of farm products.  The U.S. wants Canada to end supply management, but Canada stands firm on keeping it.

Talks in Montreal are scheduled through next Monday.
