FAYETTEVILLE -- Columbia Gas technicians have resolved a problem with the gas distribution system in the Chambersburg area, but continue to check gas mains.

The "pressure issue," detected about a week and a half ago, was resolved the day the company detected it, according to Columbia Gas spokesman Russell Bedell. The pressure issue was not a leak, but was related to a bypass valve on the system. The cause is under investigation.

Columbia Gas operates a gas distribution system system in parts of Franklin County outside the Borough of Chambersburg. The borough operates its own, independent natural gas system.

"Columbia Gas has had service technicians in the field performing surveys on our lines," he said. "This thorough system survey is being done to ensure that our system is operating properly. Customers in Franklin County in the area of the survey may see Columbia Gas technicians surveying natural gas mains, service lines and meters."

All Columbia Gas employees and its authorized contractors carry photo identification badges. Most Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania employees and contractors drive vehicles that are clearly marked.

"If residents see any Columbia Gas employees or contractors surveying our system, they should feel free to ask to see their ID badge," Bedell said. "Our customers’ safety and comfort is our number one priority."

Should Columbia Gas need to need to make any repairs, service technicians will make direct contact with that customer and explain the situation.

"We do not anticipate any outages on our system," Bedell said.
