Villanova keeps hold of No. 1 spot in USA TODAY Sports men's basketball poll

A typically wild week in men’s college basketball led to considerable shuffling in the USA TODAY Sports coaches poll. This time, however, the change didn’t reach the top.

Villanova's Phil Booth, left, talks with Omari Spellman during the first half against Connecticut.

The first three teams took care of business. As a result, Villanova will keep the top spot for at least another week. The Wildcats picked up 31 of 32 first-place votes cast in the poll. Virginia, still unscathed in Atlantic Coast Conference play, holds steady at No. 2 with Big Ten leader Purdue again at No. 3. The Boilermakers retained the remaining No. 1 vote.

After that, the top 10 looks very different. Duke is back up to No. 4. Kansas vaults up to No. 5 after regaining control of the Big 12, helped by a big comeback win at West Virginia. Michigan State appears to have snapped out of a mini slump and is back up to No. 6. West Virginia is seventh followed by for a tie for eight between rivals Cincinnati and Xavier at No. 8. North Carolina round out the top 10.

Wichita State takes a big hit after dropping a couple of games in its new conference. The Shockers fall from fourth to No. 16. Ohio State is moving the other direction, making nine-place jump to No. 13.

Saint Mary’s returns to the rankings at No. 18 on the heels of a huge win at Gonzaga. Florida, also picking up a big road victory at Kentucky, rejoins the poll at No. 22. No. 23 Rhode Island is the week’s other newcomer.

Kentucky fell out of the poll for the first time since March 10, 2014, ending a run of 79 consecutive appearances.
