A Milwaukee police officer who was shot in the foot by his partner when the two encountered an armed suspect at a domestic disturbance has been released from the hospital, a police spokesman said Friday.

The suspect, a 48-year-old man, remained hospitalized under police custody Friday morning, Sgt. Tim Gauerke said.

Police received a report of a domestic disturbance involving a "suspect armed with knives" shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday in the 600 block of S. Hawley Road, according to a police news release.

During the encounter, a 21-year-old rookie officer fired his service weapon, hitting the 48-year-old man in the leg and his 25-year-old partner in the foot, police said.

Both officers are assigned to the District 3 police station and the officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative duty.

The shooting is under investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department Metropolitan Investigations Unit.

State law only requires investigations of fatal officer-involved shootings to be led by outside agencies.
