Milwaukee County Zoo penguins step on the scale after holidays, just like humans

The scene was all too familiar for countless folks who perhaps indulged too much over the holidays.

A bathroom scale. A creature not sure about stepping down. Perhaps the number popping up would be higher than just a few weeks earlier.

Perhaps that's why the video on the Milwaukee County Zoo's Facebook page posted a few days after New Year's went viral.

A baby gentoo penguin hangs out with its mother and father in its nest at the Milwaukee Zoo's aviary on Thursday. Zookeepers won't know its gender for a few weeks.

In the minute-long video, the Milwaukee zoo's gentoo and rockhopper penguins line up patiently, and sometimes not too patiently, to do the thing most Americans dreaded right after the holidays — step on the scale.

In a video posted Jan. 5 on the zoo's Facebook page, a zookeeper passes out fish treats as the penguins each step on the scale. Zookeepers have trained the gentoo and rockhopper penguins to weigh themselves once a month and on a recent weigh-in, a videographer shot a short movie that quickly exploded on the internet.

Apparently, at least one penguin didn't get the memo and plopped on to the scale while one of its brethren was already getting weighed.

No word on whether any of the zoo's penguins gained weight during the holidays or signed up for Weight Watchers memberships.
