Minnesota Pork Board focused on perception and regulation

The Minnesota Pork Board has its sights set on public perception and regulation in the new year.

Board chair Reuben Bode, a pig farmer from Nicollet County, says as people become further removed from the farm, the pork industry must continue chipping away at consumer misconceptions.

“A dietitian at a grocery store for example.  She’s going to get asked a lot of questions, so if we can convince her that we’re doing things right, she will in turn spread that around.”

Speaking to Brownfield at Minnesota Pork Congress Tuesday, Bode expressed frustration about the process of building new hog buildings.

“There’s so much concern about maybe the odor, maybe the noise, maybe the dust.  Everything is out there.  And quite frankly, if they’re built in the right spot it should never be a concern.”

Bode tells Brownfield he was met with resistance while building a new finishing site two years ago.

He says he offered assurances to concerned neighbors and there haven’t been any problems.
