AROUND THE AREA

Yellow whistles for Greg: Basketball officials in southern Wisconsin will wear yellow whistles during games Thursday-Saturday in honor of Greg Von Rueden, a Marquette High School student who died in Jan. 2014 after an 18-month battle with cancer.

Officials across the state will donate their game checks to Make-A-Wish Wisconsin in Von Reuden's honor with money raised this year going to Graham, a 3-year-old from Cudahy with a rare congenital heart disease, to help fund a trim for him and his family to Disney World.

To make a donation go to site.wish.org/goto/ywfg.

Gatorade honor: Lake Country Lutheran senior Brooke Andersen has been named the Gatorade girls volleyball state player of the year. She is the school’s first Gatorade player of the year in any sport.

The Iowa State recruit led the Lightning to a 45-5 record and the Division 3 state title in November. She averaged 5.5 kills per set and finished with the year with 678 kills and a .473 hitting percentage. She carries a 3.93 grade-point average.

Committed: Brookfield Central’s girls volleyball team expects to have a Division I recruit on the floor next season. McKenna Wucherer, an eighth grader in the district who plays for the Milwaukee Sting club program, committed to play at Minnesota, Central coach Scott Spiess said. Wucherer’s sister, Miranda, is a two-time Greater Metro Conference player of the year who will play at Northern Kentucky next season.

Save the date: New Berlin Eisenhower will officially name its gym in honor of former boys basketball coach Dave Scheidegger on Feb. 16 when the Lions play host to New Berlin West. Scheidegger retired after 27 seasons in April. His teams went 430-185 (.699) and won the Division 2 state title in 2008.

Greendale HOF: Former girls basketball and softball  standout Ashley Imperiale is among the individuals who will be inducted into the Greendale athletic hall of fame Feb. 2 between the school’s junior varsity and varsity boys basketball games against Pius XI. A reception will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the high school multipurpose room; the ceremony will begin at 6:45 p.m. in the gym.

Here is the rest of the class: Jenna Lennertz Stoner, a 2008 graduate who was a state swim champion; Mark Loughrin, a 1996 graduate who was a state tennis champion and Ron Barbian, a boys basketball and boys tennis coach who career spanned the 1960s to 80s.

Bosley shines overseas: Homestead junior Drew Bosley finished 11th at the Great Edinburgh Cross Country Challenge Jan. 13 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Bosley was one of six athletes selected to compete for Team USA in the Junior Men division. He completed the 6,000-meter course in 19 minutes 57 seconds, the fourth-best time on the team.

That finish follows a string of high finishes for Bosley at national events. He finished seventh at the Footlocker Nationals in San Diego and the Nike Cross Nationals in Portland.
