Baldwin wants MPP fixed

A U.S. Senator is pushing Congress to fix the dairy margin protection program in the 2018 ag funding bill.

“I’d like to see us make a commitment to dairy in our ag appropriations process.”

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin tells Brownfield the dairy margin protection program was meant to provide farmers with an insurance if the margin between the price of milk and the cost of feed gets to a certain level, but it’s not working.  “Farmers pay for this insurance, however the program has not yet provided the meaningful coverage that dairy farmers need.”

She says the program needs to be updated and expanded so that it can offer farmers better risk management options. Baldwin has sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Thad Cochran and Vice Chairman Pat Leahy calling for such reforms.
