Grand theft kitchen: 2 men accused of stealing cabinets from Ave Maria home

Two men were arrested on felony charges of burglary and grand theft after a deputy discovered them transporting a trailer loaded with numerous large boxes out of Ave Maria at 2:30 a.m. Sunday, according to a Collier County Sheriff's Office report.

Rafael Cruz

Osvaldo Gutierrez, 28, of Miami, and Rafael Cruz, 28, of Clewiston, were charged with burglary of an unoccupied structure and grand theft between $5,000 and $10,000 for the theft of kitchen cabinets valued at $7,000.

The report says the deputy stopped the pickup because the trailer attached to the back did not have a license plate, as well as there have been recent burglaries in the area and the time of the day was odd to be transporting the load of cabinets.

A detective interrogated the two and learned that Cruz was attempting to get a contract tile job at the Ave Maria house under construction, the report says, and that he returned to the job site with Gutierrez and knew about the cabinets inside. They entered the home without permission and loaded the cabinets onto the trailer, the report says.

The detective contacted a superintendent with the home's builder, CC Homes, who confirmed that the cabinets had just arrived Friday and belonged to them.
