CCSO: Early morning high-speed chase leads to 3 arrests

Three men were arrested following an early morning high-speed car chase and foot pursuit by K-9 police dogs, according to the Collier County Sheriff's Office.

Osmil Tejeda Hernandez

A report says the chase started around 4:30 a.m. Sunday and reached speeds of 100 mph along Collier Boulevard and other side streets in Golden Gate and Golden Gate Estates.

Osmil Tejeda Hernandez, of Miami, 40; Nicolas Benitez, of Miami, 43; and Manuel Bermudez Viera, of Miami Gardens, 39, were each charged with resisting arrest without violence.

Hernandez, the driver of a Ford F-150 pickup, was also charged with fleeing or eluding a law enforcement officer in a marked unit with emergency equipment activated.

The report doesn't specify what time the chase ended but says deputies attempted to use stop sticks at Collier Boulevard and Golden Gate Parkway. Hernandez saw the sticks being deployed, the report states, and turned rapidly onto 25th Avenue SW to avoid them. He continued along that dead-end road, turned into a driveway and drove into the woods, where the three men jumped out of the vehicle, the report says.

A perimeter was set up, K-9 dogs and their handlers responded, and a Sheriff's Office helicopter was dispatched. The K-9s found the suspects, and all three needed to be transported and treated at a hospital for dog bites.

The report says deputies were attempting to stop the truck, which appeared to be unregistered, after they were informed by the Lee County Sheriff's Office that the men were involved in a cellular store burglary in Lee County. An active investigation is ongoing regarding that incident, and more charges may be filed against the three, a Collier County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman said.
