NDN Half Marathon: Job, passion restored, Parker Stinson wins men's title

Parker Stinson, 25, from Boulder, Colorado crosses the finish line as the first male runner with a time of 1:03:34.3 during the Naples Daily News Half Marathon on Sunday.

In March 2016, Parker Stinson suffered a torn Achilles' tendon. The injury required surgery. It also meant he couldn't run for at least seven months.

For most everyone else, that would be no big deal. For Stinson, an All-American distance runner at the University of Oregon who had just begun his professional career, it was devastating.

“Imagine losing your job and your passion at the same time,” said Stinson, who is from Boulder, Colorado. “I love running, and I'm paid to run. It was scary. With an injury like that, as an elite athlete, you don't know if you'll ever be your very best again.”

On Sunday, the 25-year-old Stinson, admittedly, might not have been at his very best, but he was pretty darn good in winning the 2018 Naples Daily News Half Marathon.

With race time conditions in the high-40s and windy, Stinson completed the 13.1-mile course in 1 hour, 3 minutes, 34 seconds to earn the $2,000 winner’s check. He finished more than three minutes ahead Austin Richmond, who placed second.

Naples High graduate Kurt Roeser, also now of Boulder, ran third. Benjamin Sathre of St. Paul, Minnesota, was fourth in 1:08.27.1. Last year's winner, Tyler McCandless was fifth in 1:09:07.7.

Kurt Roeser, 30, from Boulder, Colorado crosses the finish line as the third male runner with a time of 1:07:37.0 during the Naples Daily News Half Marathon on Sunday.

“The cool weather was amazing,” said Stinson, a native of Austin, Texas. “I got out so fast because the tailwind was so great. I was happy about starting fast and staying strong the whole race, even if I was running into a headwind the last few miles.”

Stinson, who runs for the Saucony Racing Team, was able to resume running in October 2016. His first competitive race was a month later.

“I wasn't back, but I was running,” said Stinson, who was competing in Sunday’s race for the first time. “But now I feel like I am back. The injury taught me not to take running for granted. Now, every race matters to me.”

Racing matters to Roeser too, though now the 30-year old does it just for fun. Born and raised in Naples, Roeser competed for the University of Florida after high school.

A physical therapist by profession, Roeser has competed in the half marathon the past few years.

“It makes for a good excuse to come back and visit family,” said Roeser, whose parents still live in Naples. “Today’s weather was perfect for me. Last year, when it was really hot, I ran six minutes slower than I did today.

“And as for getting third place -- that’s awesome. There was a lot of tough competition out there. I'm very happy.”
