The Impacts of Winter Weather with Jeff Massey

This winter, consistent northerly winds from Canada and the Arctic have caused record low temperatures across the Midwest. Combined with a lack of insulating snow, this kind of cold weather can damage winter crops and challenge livestock producers. On this episode, Atmospheric Science Technical Lead Jeff Massey from The Climate Corporation helps explain the positive and negative impacts of this kind of unseasonable weather and what to expect in the coming months.

  • What is occurring in the Midwest is not just because of the northerly winds but instead one of many examples that prove climate change is real. This picture isn’t just for the next couple months; it’s for our future. Many parts of the world are being impacted by changes of weather. For example, in Oromia, Ethiopia, the temperature of the area is increasing, and the rainfall is decreasing causing resource scarcity. At the rate that greenhouse emissions are released, we might be looking at mass extinctions of foundational species, and cultural keystone species throughout the globe. Everything we do is all interconnected, and we as people contribute to the greenhouse gases released into the environment.
