United offers up double miles in Seattle

Facing similar promotions from Alaska Airlines and Delta (as well as increased competition in the market) United Airlines is now offering up double miles for some key routes in and out of Seattle. Flights between the Emerald City and Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland and Anchorage are all eligible for the promotion. Registration is required.

This promotion is the actual launch of the promo I wrote about last week, the one which was released with no details. At least they’ve figured that part out.

The fine print on this promo makes it rather less than ideal. Similar to Delta’s version all tickets must be purchased by the end of 2013, even though travel is valid well in to the new year. Also, the fare is restricted to only the higher fare classes:

  • Registration and booking on united.com is required by December 31, 2013.
  • Members can earn double award miles on base miles earned for travel in F, A, J, C, D, Z, P, Y, B, M, E, U, H, Q, V, W and S fare classes.

Better than nothing, certainly, but still not as generous as the similar offers from the competition. One could argue that it is a lackluster “me-too” effort, just to say they’re trying.

  1. Is it really “TO” as well as “FROM”?

Maybe I read the T&Cs to quickly, but it appeared to me that only tickets TO SEA from those cities counted.

    1. Yes, it really is both. From the T&Cs:

Offer is valid for all nonstop flights marketed and operated by United® or United Express® between Seattle and any of the following cities: Los Angeles, Portland (Oregon), San Francisco or Anchorage.

Connections to and out of Seattle, Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco or Anchorage are allowed. However, the bonus is only valid for nonstop segments between Seattle (SEA) and any of the following cities: Los Angeles (LAX), Portland (PDX), San Francisco (SFO) or Anchorage (ANC).

“Between” means it doesn’t matter which end you start or finish at.
