The Singapore Airlines Employment Application – WOW…crazy questions

by Adam

Interestingly enough, one of the most read posts on this blog is How Much Do Singapore Airlines Flight Attendants Get Paid for Providing Great Service?. In response, I receive multiple emails per day asking if I know anything more about the application process. This week, I was finally able to get my hands on the latest Singapore Airlines employment application…and boy is it crazy! The majority of the questions and requests would be considered illegal if a US employer was to ask them. Here are some of my favorites, along with the full employment application below, picture of course required for any application:

  • Have you any visible scars, birthmarks and/or pigment spots on your face, neck, hands and lower arms?
  • Have you suffered from any mental illness or any physical illness or disability for which you have received medical treatment? (e.g. diabetes, tuberculosis, epilepsy, asthma, etc.)
  • Please provide your grades for all English, Math, and Science courses.
  • Are you currently wearing any dental braces? If yes, please proceed to question 11b. Please state expected date of removal of braces.
  • Have you ever been charged with any offense or convicted by any Court or detained by the authorities under the provisions of any law in any country? (Important: Please note you must give full details of any charges made against you even if you were eventually acquitted by the Court).
  • Has any Court judgement or order ever been made against you ordering you to pay a debt to someone?
  • Has any bankruptcy action ever been taken against you?
  • Have you signed a promissory note or an acknowledgement of indebtedness for which the amount pledged has not already been fully repaid?
  • Have you any relative in SIA? If yes, please give designation, name and relationship.
  • Are you able to swim?

It’s not illegal in the US to ask those questions. Why do you think the high end Vegas casinos have the best waitresses?

Some casinos have taken the position that drink servers are “entertainers,” which allow them to take appearance into consideration. There have been some challenges from time to time, but broadly they seem successful in their pursuits. Airlines in the US ask about weight and health for prospective FAs (remember, they are here primarily for our safety)…alas, they don’t take the entertainer position. 😉

I spent the summer of 1994 in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Vietnam. In Singapore, the employment ads in the newspapers often indicated that ” Malays need not apply”. Singaporeans are the minority in Singapore, due to lower birth rate compared to Malays and Indians, but control the majority of the economy. Many things there are deemed prejudiced or illegal by Americans but you cannot affirm that it has more societal ills than that of America. In Asia and Middle East, you must include your photo with the application for employment. Singaporean government does not engage in any project that will not generate profits. When the elderly vote, their vote is worth only half value compared to those of working people who pay taxes because they no longer contribute to the society. Why do old folks pay less for medical coverages but demand more medical services when they have their entire life working and saving for retirement? Young people have huge student loan debts, limited employment opportunities and experiences, and family obligations and pay more for medical coverage with good health. Crazy?

@globetrotter: I think you mean Malaysia. Singaporeans and Malaysians are nationalities/citizenship, not a race or ethnic group. So you meant Chinese-Malaysians, versus Chinese-Singaporeans, who are the majority % of the population by race in Singapore. It’s disputable whether Chinese-Malaysians actually control the majority of the economy in Malaysia, but what is clear is that the respective governments of Malaysia (Malay-Malaysians dominated) and Singapore (Chinese-Singaporeans dominated) dominate a majority % of the economic and capital activities in those countries. SIA/Singapore Airlines, for instance, is majority Singapore-govt owned by equity.

Typical Singaporean mentality.Notice the heavy emphasis on debts. The SQ sarong party girl is famous for living beyond her means.Singapore has to have the most draconian bankruptcy laws in the world. The social stigma means you are basically an outcast and failure to comply means you can get arrested, thrown in jail, and barred from leaving Singapore unless you pay up.Any one who enjoys basic civil liberties should think twice about chewing gum, expressing your opinion about the govt, etc – you will get arrested.
