Vols fans offer more constructive criticism

As you might have noticed in my previous column, readers and writers share a special bond, as evidenced by our exchange of emails over the past year.

Granted, readers occasionally can be critical. But their criticism is invariably constructive.

You can tell that by the following emails.

Charlie wrote: Why don't you do a swan dive off the south end of Neeland into the tennessee river.

My response: Neyland is spelled with a "y."

John wrote: You are a complete (bleep). I don’t even like Butch Jones, but your vicious, self-righteous attacks during 2017 are uncalled for. You are a vapid, soulless, (bleep).

No one cares what you think.

My response: Actually, they do care what I think. That’s why I vote on the Heisman Trophy, the Doak Walker Award, the Biletnikoff Award and in The Associated Press poll. And that’s why someone as astute as you reads my columns.

Hotty Toddy wrote: As an Ole Miss alum, & having strong ties to the athletic department, I can assure you that Butch Jones is not/would not be high on our search list.

If & when the time comes for us to select a new coach, we can do better than Butch Jones and will.

My response:  I’m sure Ole Miss will hire one of the best coaches in the country, and he will revive the glory days of the late 1950s and early 1960s under Johnny Vaught.

Bob wrote: The next step towards getting TN football healthy is for you to leave. Your columns are a cancer. You repeatedly cross the line and do nothing but fuel a fire of negativity maybe people should call for your job like you call for others.

My response: You sound like Butch Jones, blaming the media for his incompetence. UT football will be much healthier with a different coach.

Lynn wrote: How can you be so negative about a win? Most folks welcome your retirement. Did you and your paper not get a hint from the recent election in Tennessee? The cup is half full, not half empty.

My response: I’m having too much fun to retire. Your election analogy makes absolutely no sense. If you’re going to email me, put more thought into the content.

Matt wrote: Why is this moron (Butch Jones) still our coach (before Jones was fired)?

My response: But the buildings are getting better.

Dale wrote: Are you going to the World Series this year? I’ll carry your luggage, park your car, or whatever if you need an assistant and the Cubs return to the big dance.

My response: I wish you had told me sooner. I have a credential. We had a photo pass also, but then decided not to send photographer. So I canceled it. Sorry.

Aaron wrote: I apologize for my cold outreach. Get your web development and online promotion jobs done here in India at a minimum price by experts, where you won’t compromise more quality. Do let me know if you are interested.

My response: Sorry, but I’ve already signed a contract with a sketchy firm in Pakistan, which assures me of high quality and cheap price. If things don’t work out, I will get back to you.

Rick wrote: No one could possibly blame this year on just Butch Jones (after he was fired). It takes a village of fools to prepare a team to play like they did tonight (against LSU).

They should fire the rest of those guys and beg Greenback's coach to get the team ready for Vandy.

My response: I’m sure Greenback’s coach would do it for the $50,000 extra they’re paying interim head coach Brady Hoke.
