Foxconn Technology Group's plans to build a huge manufacturing plant in Mount Pleasant have helped prompt civil engineering firm R.A. Smith Inc. to open an office there.

Spurred in part by the planned Foxconn Technology Group development, civil engineering and surveying firm R.A. Smith Inc. has opened a small office in Mount Pleasant.

“Our local presence will benefit both our local government clients and those involved in the Foxconn development,” Richard Smith, president of the Brookfield-based company, said in a statement.

The firm isn't directly involved in Foxconn-related tasks. But it has been working for the Village of Mount Pleasant and will continue to do so in 2018, overseeing the community's paving program and other projects, said Chris Stamborski, assistant director of municipal services for R.A. Smith.

Two or three engineers will be based in the Mount Pleasant office initially, along with surveyors and construction services staff as needed, company spokeswoman Karen Wiesneski said. The firm expects to add jobs there in the future, she said.

Smith employs about 200 people in eight offices. The company provides such services as construction inspection and management, land surveying and municipal engineering.
