Red tide found at very low levels at Naples beaches, dead fish offshore Gordon Pass

Red tide has been reported in very low concentrations at some Naples beaches, and dead fish have been found offshore of Gordon Pass.

The Collier County Health Department collected samples Tuesday that showed very low concentrations of red tide at Barefoot Beach, Seagate, Naples Pier and South Marco Beach.

Very low concentrations of red tide can cause respiratory irritation, especially for people with asthma or emphysema, though offshore winds should minimize red tide impacts at the beach this weekend, county officials reported.

The harmful algal bloom, at high enough concentrations, also can kill fish and marine mammals.

Dead fish have been reported between 5 and 15 miles west of Gordon Pass, according to the county.

No dead fish have been reported on the beaches, and no respiratory irritation has been reported.
