HARRISBURG - A hearing scheduled for Friday in the case of a well-known, Chambersburg-area doctor whose medical license was suspended last month due to conditions inside the office of his family practice has been delayed.

The order granting the motion for continuance filed earlier this week states the preliminary hearing will be delayed indefinitely and that Dr. Paul Orange's license will remain suspended.

Orange's license was suspended nearly a month ago, for a combination of issues related to clutter throughout his office, located in the 4000 block of Lincoln Way East in Fayetteville. A report put together following a joint investigation by the Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Department of State Bureau of Enforcement and Investigation said various areas of the office, including exam rooms, were dusty and dirty, that medications dating back to the 1990s - and long expired - were found, and that medical tools had not been cleaned properly.

Orange was required to notify all patients "potentially exposed to blood-borne pathogens from procedures" performed in his office, so that the patients could follow up with testing for blood-borne pathogens such as HIV, hepatitis B and C.

A preliminary hearing in this case is similar to a preliminary hearing held in criminal proceedings, in that authorities must show there is enough evidence to move forward. In Orange's case, the state will need to show enough evidence to support the facts presented in the petition for the temporary suspension of Orange's medical license.

The temporary suspension is in effect until the hearing is rescheduled "or upon further order of the State Board of Medicine," according to court documents.

Patients who have been unable get care during Orange's suspension may seek assistance from other doctors in the area, including those listed below, from the major health care providers. Patients may also seek out independent physicians.
