City of Milwaukee property tax bills are accurate despite funky numbers

When Milwaukee tax bills arrive in mailboxes next week, property owners will notice a difference in some of the figures.

The city treasurer's office began using a new computer system this year and though most of the numbers are accurate, the 2016 Net Tax column understates the public schools tax levy and overstates the city government tax levy by the amount of the 2016 state school tax credit.

The overall 2017 tax bills are accurate.

But property owners who scan their bills closely will notice the percent change amounts for public schools and city government are not accurate. That's because of the way the new computer system calculated bills during the printing process, according to the city treasurer's office.

A notice explaining the discrepancy in 2016 numbers will be included in property tax bills.

Online access to Munis Citizen Self Service should be available on the City of Milwaukee Treasurer's Department website starting Monday.

Taxpayers with questions about the 2017 property tax bills can call (414) 286-2240.
