Missouri proposal would limit property taxes

A measure that would exempt property owners from paying taxes on land and homes they’ve owned longer than 30 years has been filed in the Missouri legislature. Republican State Representative Rick Brattin of Harrisonville says his constituents in western Missouri overwhelmingly support his proposal, “Your seniors are the ones that will benefit. Your farmers will be the ones that have had – their century-long farm of their family has paid in full for, you know, decades and decades.”

Brattin’s House joint resolution would authorize a property tax exemption for people who’ve owned real property for thirty years and for those who’ve owned personal property for ten years. Brattin says his proposal would be subject to a statewide vote. It is unclear how that property tax income would be offset. Property taxes in Missouri support public schools.
