Green Bay Packers wide receiver Trevor Davis (11) gets congratulations from special teams coach Ron Zook after a long punt return against the Cleveland Browns on Dec. 10, 2017 at FirstEnergy Stadium in Cleveland.

GREEN BAY - Even with his spectacular 65-yard punt return against the Cleveland Browns — a zig-zagging maraud that set up a crucial score — growing pains persist for Green Bay Packers returner Trevor Davis.

In the fourth quarter, Davis made the mistake of not fielding a punt that landed around the Green Bay 15-yard line. The ball bounced, hopped and rolled its way to the 3-yard line, costing the Packers valuable field position when they trailed by a touchdown.

Davis looked dejected as the ball was finally downed, and Browns punter Britton Colquitt pumped his fists while staring at the sky.

“We give him a distance and then we talk during the week also about where the guy’s trying to place the punts and so forth,” special teams coordinator Ron Zook said.

He added: “Those are all things that you learn from, and we were fortunate enough to get out of there. That’s something (where you say), ‘OK look, it happened, let’s learn from it.’ It didn’t hurt us in that situation, now let’s go.”

Poor grades: A second straight win wasn’t enough to give Packers coach Mike McCarthy a pleasant Monday morning.

McCarthy said he was not satisfied with how the Packers played Sunday in Cleveland. They needed overtime — after a 14-point fourth-quarter comeback — to beat the winless Browns.

“Our correction period as a coaching staff,” McCarthy said, “we had a couple rough meetings this morning. We didn’t play very well. We had guys, our grades overall as a team were probably some of the lowest we had all year. So that’s what were focused on.

“We had too many mental errors. So we need to spend some time.”

McCarthy said the team will spend “a little extra time” in Wednesday’s practice to fix the mental errors before this week’s game in Carolina.

“We’ve got to clean that up,” McCarthy said. “I was not happy in a lot of areas of the way we played.”
