Northey calls Pruitt a friend of renewable fuels

Iowa Ag Secretary and USDA nominee Bill Northey says EPA administrator Scott Pruitt is a friend of renewable fuels.

The two spent time together in central Iowa last week as Pruitt discussed the RFS and environmental issues with invited guests on a farm near Nevada.

“He’s very supportive of the renewable fuels program.  He said ‘You have a friend, not somebody you need to push against.  I am from a state that produces a lot of oil, but I believe in this program and I believe in what the President supports as well.”

Northey tells Brownfield he’s mostly pleased with the Renewable Volume Obligations set by the EPA.

“Certainly the ethanol numbers are strong.  We’d love to see those biodiesel numbers be stronger because we know if encouraged and allowed, the industry can produce more biodiesel.  So we hope that grows and get a chance to talk (with Pruitt) over time about why those numbers need to be better.”

Northey’s nomination to become USDA Undersecretary of Farm Production and Conservation has been held up by Texas Senator Ted Cruz, who met with President Trump to discuss the RFS last week.
