Michigan man died in Lee County crash Monday

A fatal crash shut down westbound Alico Road at Gator Road in south Lee County on Monday, Dec. 11, 2017.

Florida Highway Patrol identified a man who died in a crash Monday afternoon in Lee County.

David Joseph Fons, of Brighton, Michigan, was killed. Fons, 63, was driving a Nissan Versa eastbound on Alico Road approaching Gator Road in the left turn lane, according to an FHP release. Raydel Gray Gonzalez, of Lehigh Acres, was driving a Volvo vehicle westbound on Alico Road approaching Gator Road in the inside lane.

Both vehicles were approaching a red light, according to FHP.

Fons turned left into the intersection at the same time Gonzalez continued driving west on Alico Road, according to FHP. The front right of Fons' car struck the front of Gonzalez's vehicle. 

After the crash, the Nissan spun counter-clockwise and came to rest facing southwest in the westbound lanes of Alico Road, according to FHP. The Volvo continued northwest and stopped facing west on the north shoulder of Alico Road.

Gonzalez, 35, was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, according to the release. Alcohol was not a factor in the crash, according to FHP.

The FHP report does not say if charges are pending.

Westbound lanes on Alico Road had been closed for four hours while troopers investigated the crash.
