Increased packing capacity helps pork industry grow

The vice president of pork analytics for EMI Analytics says the pork industry continues to grow at a steady pace with the help of increased packing capacity.

Steve Meyer says the long-term impact of more packing facilities is unclear, but it is offering farmers more opportunities.

“they have opportunities to price inputs and products out into 2018 at very profitable rates,” he says. “Even from a risk standpoint we think they’re in pretty good shape as far as the next coming year.”

He tells Brownfield the addition of the new plants in Iowa and Michigan brings the total US hog slaughter capacity up to 2.6 million head per week.

But it doesn’t stop there…

“We have another plant that’s under construction in Iowa that will open next fall and they plan to buy half the hogs in the open market,” he says.

Meyer spoke to Brownfield at the Midwest Pork Conference.
