Eagles' Carson Wentz suffers season-ending torn ACL

One day after clinching the NFC East, the Philadelphia Eagles received confirmation that they must navigate the rest of the regular season and playoffs without their offensive engine.

Quarterback Carson Wentz suffered a torn left anterior cruciate ligament, Eagles coach Doug Pederson confirmed on Monday after an MRI. 

Wentz left Sunday's 43-35 win over the Los Angeles Rams in the third quarter. He initially remained in the game after taking hits on a touchdown run that was called back, but he was evaluated by trainers after scoring on a fourth-down throw to Alshon Jeffery and was later ruled out. Pederson said Monday that the team believes the injury occurred before contact.

With four touchdown passes in the game, Wentz built his season total to an NFL-best 33, which also broke Sonny Jurgensen's franchise record for most in a single season.

"People thought our chances were gone by the wayside when Jason Peters went down, when Darren Sproles went down," Pederson said Monday. "For fans out there, you can’t lose faith. This has been resilient football team all season long."

Nick Foles takes over as the starting quarterback after subbing in for Wentz on Sunday. The sixth-year veteran completed six of 10 passes for 42 yards.

“I’m absolutely ready,” Foles said after the game. “That’s what I’m here for.”

The Eagles next face the New York Giants in Week 15 before a Christmas clash against the Oakland Raiders and a season finale against the Dallas Cowboys.
