Munir found guilty in 2013 pharmacy burglary

ALAMOGORDO – Twelfth Judicial District Attorney John P. Sugg announced Friday that Tareeq Munir, 39, was recently convicted of aggravated burglary (deadly weapon), possessing hydrocodone with intent to distribute, larceny (over $2,500), possession of controlled substance, possession of dangerous drugs, possession of burglary tools, resisting arrest, and three counts of criminal damage to property following a two-day trial before the Judge James W. Counts, according to a 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office press release.      

According to the release, Munir burglarized the Medical Arts Pharmacy, 1301 E. 10th St., on Dec. 14, 2013. During the burglary, Munir set off a motion detector then Alamogordo Police Department officers responded to the alarm. When officers arrived at the business, they found the electricity, Internet, and telephone lines to the building were cut and the back door had been pried open.

According to the release, Munir was found hiding in the false ceiling within the pharmacy with 1,700 tablets of Hydrocodone, testosterone and other controlled substances all of which had been taken from within the pharmacy. Munir attempted to escape when officers were arresting him, but was unsuccessful.

According to the release, the case was pending for a considerable amount of time because Munir jumped bond and fled New Mexico’s jurisdiction. The bonding company forfeited $77,000 after Munir fled. Once Munir was apprehended in El Paso, Texas, he was extradited back to New Mexico to answer for his crimes.

According to the release, as a habitual offender, Munir faces about 27 1/2 years in prison at his sentencing hearing. Munir is jail Otero County Detention Center without bond pending his sentencing hearing.

Munir is also suspected of attempting to burglarize the same location on Oct. 19, 2013. Munir is also charged with five pharmacy burglaries in El Paso, Texas, and has been convicted in two of those cases.
