Naples police are investigating after Abby Wambach, a former U.S. soccer player and Olympic gold medalist, reported three people burglarized her car, which was parked in front of her Naples home.

Officers responded to Wambach's home on Crayton Road at 8:23 a.m. Wednesday in reference to a report of auto theft, auto burglary, grand theft and criminal mischief, according to a Naples police report.

Wambach and her wife, Glennon Doyle Melton, told police that someone entered Wambach's vehicle, parked in the driveway of the residence, the report states.

Wambach and Doyle Melton said they did not give anyone permission to enter the vehicle and indicated they wanted to press charges, according to the report.

Crime scene investigators responded and processed the car for "possible latent fingerprint evidence," the report states.

In a post on the social media platform Instagram on Wednesday, Wambach wrote that three individuals broke into the car and "joy rode" it for a few hours between 1:34 a.m. and 4:30 a.m.

"They stole valuables including a purse and wallet (gift to my wife) and wrote hate speech in Sharpie all over the inside of our car," the post states.

The Instagram post includes what appears to be video from a surveillance camera that shows two individuals pull into the driveway, park a car and then leave as another car pulls in near the end of the driveway.

Naples police declined to comment on what type of hate speech was found inside the vehicle.

"In an effort not to compromise the active investigation, there will be no further comment until the investigation is closed," Lt. Seth Finman said in an email.

The Daily News left a voicemail message at a number listed for Wambach on Thursday, but it was not returned.

Wambach retired in 2015, ending a 15-year international career that started with her national team debut against Germany at age  21, according to the U.S. Soccer Federation's website.

She retired as the leading scorer in the history of international soccer, with 184 goals, "far and away the most scored by any man or woman in international soccer," according to a 2015 U.S. Soccer release.

Wambach played in four Women’s World Cup tournaments and was a member of the 2015 Women’s World Cup champions. She won gold medals in 2004 in Athens and 2012 in London.
