Time to do homework for 2018

An Upper Midwest commodity group leader says this is a great time to evaluate the 2017 growing season.

Kirby Hettver, president of the Minnesota Corn Growers Association, tells Brownfield he and other farmers should be reviewing AT LEAST the last two years.

“We spend a lot of time looking at data to figure out what we can do better (so) we can be more efficient on the farm.  My brother and I are discussing the response to starter fertilizer this year in various scenarios.”

He says low commodity prices are weighing heavy with 2018 planning underway.

“It’s a great time to evaluate practices to try and figure out the most efficient way for our crops to harvest sun, nutrients, and water to produce the crop that we have.  It’s time to do your homework and preparation for 2018.”

A major takeaway for Hettver this year is how weather slowed planting and crop development, forcing harvest to drag well into November for many producers.

He says shorter-season hybrids could be a consideration for growers concerned about another late start in 2018.
