Best alternative-movie bets: Japanese classic 'Ugetsu,' 'Snowman' with Milwaukee Symphony

"In Between": Three Palestinian women living in Tel Aviv try to balance faith and tradition with the modern world in this award-winning Israeli drama, in Hebrew with English subtitles. 7 p.m. Friday and 5 p.m. Saturday. 

"Ugetsu": 1953 movie directed by Kenji Mizoguchi, a fable about love and war set amid Japan's civil wars of the 16th century, is considered one of the signature works of Japanese cinema. Showing in a new 4K restoration print, in Japanese with English subtitles. 9 p.m. Friday and 7 p.m. Saturday.

'The Snowman'/Milwaukee Symphony 

"The Snowman": A child's snowman comes to life in the 1982 animated adaptation of Raymond Briggs' bestselling children's story, shown with a live performance by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. The program also includes holiday carols and singalongs, and there are some preconcert activities as well. Uihlein Hall in the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, 929 N. Water St. 2:30 p.m. Saturday. Some $16 tickets still available.

"I'll Be Seeing You": Classic 1944 World War II holiday melodrama, about a blossoming romance between a soldier on leave with combat fatigue (Joseph Cotten) and a woman on Christmas furlough from prison (Ginger Rogers). 1801 N. Prospect Ave.; free parking is now available in a marked lot across Royale Place (see Allis for details). 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. $7, $5 for seniors and students, free for museum members.

Architecture Biennial/Golden Rondelle Theater 

"The Experimental City": Documentary about a scientist/planner behind the Minnesota Experimental City project of the 1960s-'70s, calling for a domed city driven by futuristic technology and innovative design. Director Chad Friedrichs will be on hand for a Q&A after the screening; showing in conjunction with the Chicago Architecture Biennial. SC Johnson Golden Rondelle Theater, 1525 Howe St., Racine. 7 p.m. Thursday. Free, but reservations (available online) recommended.
