20% Bonus on Most Points Transfers to Air Canada’s Aeroplan

Aeroplan is offering up to a 20% bonus when converting other partner program points into their miles. Registration not required.

You can earn up to 25,000 bonus miles when you convert points over to Aeroplan by December 9. At each threshold the bonus is 20%, but you don’t get bonus points for amounts in between each bonus level.

This bonus doesn’t require a single transfer to be as large as a bonus threshold. Aeroplan will count the total miles transferred in from eligible partners when calculating the bonus you earn.

Hotel partners, Hertz, and points.com are eligible for the transfer bonus. Diners Club Club Rewards is eligible, but other credit card partners like American Express Membership Rewards are not.

If you use Points.com, only exchanges are eligible for the bonus and not points trades with other members.

In general I am no longer a fan of Aeroplan. I’ve even called it the most devalued frequent flyer program in North America.

They gutted their award chart in mid-2011. They added fuel surcharges on about half their partners a few months later. Then this summer they announced another award chart devaluation.

But there still are a handful of good value awards, like 90,000 mile business class roundtrip to nearer Europe. You won’t pay fuel surcharges flying United or US Airways across the pond, either. So there are strategic uses for this.

  1. Doesn’t Points.com transfer between Aeroplan and US Airways 1 to 0.84?

    If so, 80K SPG and 100K MR points can become 105K US miles instead of 100K, and 84K respectively

    And since Points.com is usually instantaneous, if those bonus miles posted instantaneously (I doubt it), it can even be a way to get MR points into US miles in real-time so that you can hold and award and then make the transfer (how quickly does SPG transfer to Aeroplan?)

    But even if you can’t hold an award in time, I would strongly consider moving MR points into US at a 1:1.05 so long as you’re ready to book an award within the next couple of months (since a deval is likely coming)

  2. Hi Gary, is there a chance that the current SPG/Aeroplan promotion miles would qualify as hotel transfers under this promotion?
