Last year, Mrs. Weekly Flyer picked up a cool 100,000 points with the Platinum American Express offer. That offer is gone, but there are still targeted 100,000 offers for the Business Platinum American Express card. Anyway, that’s not the point. Mrs. Weekly Flyer loved the card for the past year. She used the $200 airline credit, the Global Entry fee to get Baby Weekly Flyer Global Entry access and used the lounge perks a number of times. But those benefits didn’t outweigh the high annual fee for her. So she set out on a process to cancel her card. She was kind enough to summarize her experience below.

Global Entry

Bonus 25,000 For Mrs. Weekly Flyer

  • I called to tell them that I would like to cancel due to cost of the annual fee (had already taken advantage of the 100,000 sign up and all the benefits)
  • They asked if that was the only reason
  • I told them that I liked the card but, had an issue when I signed up initially for the Neiman Marcus InCircle program via the Amex plat card. That the customer service agent had not completed the sign up initially and that I was a little disgruntled to find 9 months later that I had not been signed up properly.
  • They transferred me to “retention” type of desk agent
  • The retention desk had me restate why I wanted to cancel my card and then he offered me 25,000 bonus points if I would keep it open (no specified amount of time.)
  • I asked him what else he could offer me and he offered a $200 statement credit
  • I ended up taking the 25,000 bonus points and was very happy to keep the card open especially b/c Small Business Saturday is in a couple weeks. I will revisit at the next annual fee anniversary.

What Mrs. Weekly Flyer didn’t mention is that I got a text in the middle of the day asking which was better, $200 or 25,000 American Express points. I quickly replied 25,000 points. She chose wisely and went with the 25,000 points.

Bottom Line

Mrs. Weekly Flyer loves her card, but the fee was too high for her purposes, so she tried to cancel. American Express countered her request to cancel with a cool 25,000 bonus points and she now has the card for another year, with all the perks of the first year.

  1. I got the 100k card at the same time (early Jan ’13). I was thinking of waiting to call for the cancellation (retention hopefully) after Jan 1 and after I grabbed another $200 airline credit. Any reason you didn’t wait and grab the $200 airline credit? If the retention bonus was not successful you’d be leaving $200 on the table
