Nominate art for Christmas Day front page

Bradley J. Parrish's "North Pole Express" was chosen for the front page of the Christmas Day edition of the Journal Sentinel in 2016

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel will continue a tradition of offering readers the gift of art on Christmas Day.

This year, we will again prominently reproduce an artwork by a Wisconsin artist on the front page of the Journal Sentinel. The artwork will be selected by a committee that includes Editor George Stanley.

We are looking for an image appropriate for our readers on Christmas Day and made by a Wisconsin artist, living or dead. The artworks should be paintings, prints or drawings. We are not accepting photographs or images of three-dimensional artworks.

We receive nominated artworks each year from museums, galleries, artists and readers. Last year, we selected Bradley Parrish’s painting “North Pole Express,” which depicts Santa Claus holding the reins of the sleigh, presents in tow.

In previous years, we have chosen the poignant image of a mother and child by Jewell Riano-Bradley, a snow-covered tree by Michael Gapinski, a modernist painting of a Christmas tree by Robert Schellin; a winter scene by Dottie Morelle Godden; Debbie Callahan's "Madonna and Child"; "Three Kings" by Edmund Lewandowski, by the artist who created the mosaic for Eero Saarinen's War Memorial building on our lakefront; Georgene Pomplun's "Country Winter," a rural Wisconsin snowscape; and Tom Shropshire's "Winter's Eve at Holy Hill."

To nominate an artwork, please send high-resolution digital images, the title of the artwork and the name of the artist (as well as a phone number if the artist is living) to JSPhoto@jrn.com with "Christmas Art" in the subject line (we cannot guarantee we'll review your nomination unless you use this subject line). Or, send a CD or flash drive via the U.S. mail or deliver it to Jim Higgins, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 333 W. State St., Milwaukee, WI 53203.

Museums with collections of Wisconsin artists are encouraged to submit artworks. There is no limit to number of nominations. You should have the rights to reproduce the image. Entries must be received no later than 5 p.m. Dec. 8 (and the earlier the better).

As we have in previous years, we will show many of the artworks not selected for the print front page on jsonline.com.
