ALAMOGORDO — With Thanksgiving 2017 in the books, Alamogordo is already preparing to kick off Christmas with festivities on Dec. 8 and 9.

On Friday, Dec. 8, the city of Alamogordo will host their annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the newly-built Washington Park Stage.

The event also will include a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, hot cocoa, cookies, caroling, kids games and an ugly sweater contest.

On Saturday, Dec. 9, residents will line 10th Street to watch the 2017 Christmas Parade, hosted by the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce at 5 p.m.

"The theme this year is 'Home for the Holidays,'" said Community Engagement Director Kathie Schuyler. "The community absolutely loves the Christmas Parade. I think it's something everybody looks forward to every year, I know I do."

About 57 floats participated in the 2016 Christmas Parade and the Chamber hopes for even more participation in the 2017 parade.

"It's a great way to promote your business or organization," Schuyler said. "Participating also lets the community know you're here and active. I think a parade is a great way to show that."

An entry form for the parade can be obtained by visiting the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce, 1301 N. White Sands Blvd., and the entry fee is $30. Entries will be accepted until Nov. 30.
