Nutrition title helps Farm Bill succeed

Indiana Senator Joe Donnelly says if it weren’t for the nutrition program the Farm Bill wouldn’t get the support it needs from non-agricultural leaders to pass.

He tells Brownfield the nutrition title, which makes up 80 percent of the Farm Bill, is a key component of the legislation.

“It is how many of our friends and neighbors are able to get a decent meal during the day and are able to make sure their children can be fed,” he says. “In addition to that, the nutrition program is part of the Farm Bill and both the marriage of nutrition plus the ag interest helps us to have success in moving the Farm Bill through each year.

Donnelly met with groups that work to combat food insecurity in Indiana Monday as part of his Farm Bill Listening session tour. He has hosted 10 Farm Bill listening sessions around the state this year.

He says crop insurance and the conservation title remain top priorities for farmers.
