Baker Mayfield upset he won't be captain for No. 5 Oklahoma vs. West Virginia

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield said that not starting Saturday when the No. 5 Sooners take on West Virginia is one thing, but not being a team captain is something that is very upsetting.

Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Baker Mayfield won't be a captain in Saturday's game against West Virginia.

"Playing at OU was something that I always dreamed of," Mayfield told reporters Monday. "Not starting, it is what it is. But not being a team captain is so much more. It would be hard if it were a regular game or not, but it being my last one here ever, it means a lot more. It's going to be tough, because Saturday was going to be -- with out all of this -- an emotional one. It's going to be hard to handle, but ... it's going to be hard."

Mayfield grabbed his crotch and cursed at the Kansas players as Oklahoma was beating the Jayhawks 41-3 on Saturday. He also got into a back-and-forth with Kansas fans sitting behind the Oklahoma bench.

"No matter how long I go coaching, whatever the rest of my career ends up being like, I don't know that I will ever have a player that is as special to me as he is," Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said, as he discussed Mayfield's punishment.

Things got heated before kickoff when Kansas captains refused to shake the hands of Mayfield and other Oklahoma players at the coin toss.

Tempers were further flamed when a Jayhawks player delivered a late hit to Mayfield in the second quarter. Subsequently, there were several incidents of players from opposing teams jawing at each other.
