Former Duke player Steve Wojciechowski, now Marquette's head coach, was the MVP of the 1997 Maui Invitational.

Marquette men's basketball coach Steve Wojciechowski knows something about winning the Maui Invitational.

The Golden Eagles are playing in the tournament this season.

And if his players dare to question his Hawaii credentials, Wojciechowski can just point them to video of the 1997 tournament championship game at the Lahaina Civic Center.

Wojciechowski, then a senior point guard at Duke, had 13 points and five assists as the Blue Devils took down defending champion and top-ranked Arizona, 95-87.

But it was Wojciechowski's suffocating defense on Wildcats point guard Mike Bibby that earned him the MVP trophy.

Bibby, a first-team All-American that season, was harassed into 2-for-10 shooting and three turnovers.

"Coming into the game I was looking forward to the challenge. My goal was not to give him any open looks," Wojciechowski said at the time.

It was a key performance in a résumé that helped Wojciechowski be the National Association of Basketball Coaches defensive player of the year for the 1997-'98 season.

Wojciechowski finished with 33 points, 20 assists and six turnovers in the Blue Devils' three-game run to the title. Duke also beat Missouri, 82-59, and Chaminade, 106-70.

Wojciechowski was also a Duke assistant coach when the Blue Devils beat Marquette, 77-73, in the 2007 Maui final.

The Golden Eagles are back in Maui this season and play VCU on Monday.

But it looks like Wojciechowski didn't bring along his MVP trophy.
