Community support is pouring in to help 71-year-old crossing guard Andrew Tyler, as Milwaukee police continue to search for the driver who hit him last week.

Tyler was walking to his post at Kluge Elementary School about 6:30 a.m. Friday when he was hit by a burgundy car in the 7200 block of W. Carmen Ave.

The driver sped off and Tyler suffered serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, Milwaukee police said.

In the meantime, his family has set up an online donation page to help with expenses. As of Wednesday morning, more than $2,000 had been donated.

Surveillance footage captured this image of the car fleeing from the hit-and-run.

Tyler remained in critical condition this week. After experiencing kidney failure, his left leg was amputated, according to a post on the donation page.

"He was simply walking to work to protect and keep Milwaukee children safe. His life is changed forever," his family wrote.

Tyler has served as a school crossing guard through the Milwaukee Police Department for nine years, joining after his retirement from Delphi Automotive.

Milwaukee police are seeking the driver and the car, a burgundy, four-door 1997-2001 Buick Park Avenue or LeSabre.

Donations can be made online at www.gofundme.com/andy-the-crossing-guard. Anyone with information about the driver or car is asked to call police at (414) 935-7360.

Milwaukee police released this photo of a 1998 Buick Park Avenue, which resembles the car involved in a hit-and-run crash that injured a crossing guard.
